Maintaining a consistent exercise routine is essential for seniors to stay active and healthy. However, it’s not uncommon to feel bored or uninspired by the same old exercises.

To keep your fitness journey exciting and motivating, we’ve compiled seven helpful tips to spice up your exercise routine. Let’s dive in!

7 Tips to Keep Exercise Interesting

1. Try New Activities

Variety is the spice of life, and the same goes for your workout routine. Experiment with different activities like swimming, dancing, yoga, or even martial arts. Trying something new not only adds excitement but also challenges your body in different ways.

2. Incorporate Social Elements

Exercise with friends or join group classes. Socializing while working out can make exercise more enjoyable and help you stay committed. Whether it’s a fitness class, a walking group, or a dance club, the camaraderie can boost your motivation.

3. Set Goals

Set achievable fitness goals to keep yourself motivated. Whether it’s improving your balance, increasing your flexibility, or hitting a specific step count, having goals gives your workouts purpose and a sense of accomplishment.

4. Mix Up Your Routine

Change the order, duration, or intensity of your exercises regularly. You can also alternate between cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises throughout the week. Mixing things up prevents boredom and plateaus.

5. Get Outdoors

Take advantage of the great outdoors. Explore nature trails, parks, or nearby beaches for a change of scenery. Outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, or even gardening can make exercise feel like an adventure.

6. Incorporate Technology

Use fitness apps or wearable devices to track your progress, set challenges, and compete with yourself. Many apps offer guided workouts, making it easier to try new exercises and stay engaged.

7. Reward Yourself

Treat yourself when you achieve your fitness milestones.

Now, this can be a tricky one, because we don’t want our reward to overshadow the hard work we’ve accomplished.

So think of rewards as further contributing to your goals- if your goal was to start doing yoga, buy yourself a new yoga mat after two weeks of attending classes regularly.

Rewarding yourself can create positive associations with exercise and keep you motivated, but as habit researcher Gretchen Rubin would say, “the reward of exercising more is the benefits you’ve experienced because you’ve exercised more.”

So keep rewards pertinent to what you’re hoping to continue to do/accomplish/achieve.

  1. Many of us retirees are avid gardeners. I spend 4-6 hrs a day in my garden and work part time gardening and landscaping – would love some specific exercises to strengthen/ protect back, knees, shoulders. Thanks!
